10 Tips for Faithful Holiday Giving & Spending

When the Christmas holiday approaches, it often comes with the pressure to spend…which can sometimes lead to stretching our budgets too far and overspending. But what if this season became an opportunity to practice faithful stewardship instead? These 10 tips are designed to help your bank account—and your spirit—stay grounded in intentional, generous living during the holiday season.

1. Set a total budget

Determine how much you can realistically afford to spend on all your gifts this season—and commit to staying within that limit.

2. Make your giving list thoughtfully

Who do you feel called to give to this year? Reflect on why. Are those expectations realistic given your relationships and financial situation?

3. Prioritize your spending

Distribute your total budget across your list in a way that reflects your values, not just expectations.

4. Plan your gifts ahead of time

Create a list of gift ideas for each person, along with a “backup” option in case something is unavailable or over budget.

5. Shop with a strategy

Compare prices online before purchasing. If in-person shopping leads to impulse spending, consider sticking with online purchases where you can be more intentional.

6. Be efficient with in-person shopping

Plan your route to save time, energy, and gas—small decisions add up.

7. Track your spending in real time

  • Shopping in stores? Consider using cash only—when it’s gone, you’re done.
  • Shopping online? Keep a running total. When you reach your limit, stop and log off.

8. Consider non-monetary gifts

Not every gift has to be purchased. Time, care, creativity, and presence can be deeply meaningful.

9. Ask wise questions before you buy

  • Can I afford this?
  • Is this needed or meaningful?
  • What are the long-term consequences of this purchase?

10. Remember the deeper gift

The season is not ultimately about what we buy, but about what we have received. Love, grace, and generosity are gifts we can share freely—and they have the power to transform lives.
