Offering Cards for Electronic Gifts

It is important for people to participate in the act of giving as an expression of worship. As online and recurring giving have become a regular part of congregational life, many no longer place a physical gift in the offering plate—but the desire to participate in this shared, embodied moment of worship remains.

Offering cards provide a simple and meaningful way to bridge that gap.

When individuals give through electronic funds transfer (EFT), online platforms, or recurring gifts, they can place an offering card in the plate during worship. This allows their gift to be represented alongside others, received as part of the community’s collective offering, and included in the blessing.

Rather than the plate passing by “empty,” this practice affirms that:

  • Giving is an act of worship, not just a transaction
  • Digital gifts are part of the shared life of the congregation
  • Everyone can participate fully in this moment, regardless of how they give

We recommend printing these cards on heavy cardstock so they can be reused over time.

It can also be helpful to send a few offering cards to those who choose online or EFT giving, along with a brief letter that:

  • Explains the purpose and use of the cards
  • Affirms their commitment to generosity
  • Confirms details such as the amount and frequency of their recurring gift

This small practice helps congregations hold together both ancient rhythms of worship and the realities of digital giving, forming a community where every gift is visible, shared, and blessed.
